Getting Ready
While your site is being setup, the individual that will be uploading the PDF's should spend some time practising the proper PDF preparation.
PDF Setup Preparation
Note: Setting up the PDF for processing in order to produce your NewsReader Online product is the single most important step for producing an optimized product! You can take your "print PDF" and reprint to the following specs or you can print right from your pagination software. Your finished PDF (lets say its 48 pages) should be one PDF that is 48 pages long and not 48 individual PDF's. Also, always check the size of your PDF before uploading to our server. After you have processed the PDF under the specifications following, your 48 page PDF should be 48Mb or smaller, or 1Mb or less per page.
Caution: Please ensure you check your PDF size and stats before uploading. Enormous files or having to upload 2 or 3 times because you forgot a step in the setup eats up costly bandwidth. And where this becomes commonplace, bandwidth charges will apply for excessive use.
It is a fine line to get the PDF setup properly and while we have optimizers builtin to our system, the better the quality and size going in, the better it will be coming out. The two aspects effected are quality of image and speed of the page to page turning.
NewsReader Online uses XML technology and not JPG (graphic pages) and this is one of the reasons why there is unlimited zooming for any page. This helps with the fine print found in some ads and with larger format broad sheet publications.
There are two ways to produce your PDF:
1. You can output the PDF directly from your pagination software like InDesign or Quark to our specific specs listed below.
2. You can take your "Print PDF" and you can "Reprint" to our specific specs listed below.
To get the most out of your PDF conversion we recommend that you create your PDF's by following a few simple steps
PDF Requirements
- Locked PDF's can not be converted!
- The colours in the PDF must be RBG.
- Optimize your PDF to 150dpi. This will reduce file size and improve performance.
- Embed fonts and Images.
- Convert gradients or drawing nodes to "simple or smooth"
- Optimize and Flatten Transparencies and Layers This is a very important part of the PDF conversion to make ready for NewsReader Online. If this step is not taken images may appear blue or green when printed or may print only a partial page, text only or nothing, depending what is on a layer. If layers are not flattened, NRO will randomly select any layer to print.
Options for Processing PDF's
Main Option:
1. Process the PDF located on your computer (for processing small to medium files from a good Internet connection). Click on PDF to Convert and choose PDF on your computer that you have already setup to the above parameters.
Secondary Option (for slow connections):
2. Process from the PDF you have uploaded to our FTP site (for processing large files or from an unstable connection).
Upload your PDF file to: ftp.flip100.net User: flipit Pass: flipit.
Use FTP software and for large files start upload and let this process take its time. Approx rate of upload average 1 Gig per hour, so you can figure for your file size what time it will take. Once uploaded, then you can process the file now residing on our FTP site from your computer and then get your link code. Simply type in the exact name of your PDF file into FTP'ed Filename and then click Start Conversion and wait until done processing. When done it will provide your code and give you the opportunity to check your FlipBook, change your background and ensure your links are working, before you Activate.
The Processing Procedure Step by Step
1. Go to the processing form "Client Login"
2. Enter your user name
3. Enter your password.
4. Enter the Publication title from the drop down. This may be one or more of your publications.
5. Enter Issue Title, if there is a name for the issue.
6. Active Date is the date you want your publicatiion to start or kick in.
7. Issue Description is the name that will appear in the dropdown "Archive" section of listed publications that are available. This should typically be if monthly something like "Sept.09" or if the publication is a daily or weekly something like "Sept.24.09".
8. PDF to Convert will lookup the PDF on your computer.
9. FTP'd Filename is the name of the file that you uploaded. So you can process the file right on our site, rather than thru the Internet.
10. PDF Can be Download, click this box if you want subscribers to be able to download a copy of your PDF or do not check if you do not want the PDF to be downloaded.
11. Section Index if you want to allow a subscriber to move directly to a section of the book.
12. Advertiser Index if you want to list all advertisers so a reader can find quickly.
Note. You can use one, both or neither index. See how to add the indexes with the sample below the index section. Also "save your indexes" in a text editor and keep in a folder for reference.
After Processing Your PDF file, you can now:
- Check your NewsReader before final Activation
- When you are happy with the above, you can then Activate your NewsReader.
Setting Up Links

If you use the "video link", it will automatically put in a video symbol, if the link is going directly to a video file. If it goes to an HTML page, then this is not a video link it is a standard link.
The Landing Page
- Must be setup by NewsReader Online.
Background Graphic or Color
You can provide your own background custom branded image with perhaps a message on the left side. The Jpg graphic should be 800 pixels wide by 650 pixels deep. Email this graphic to nro-setup@newsreaderonline.com
Your Activation Code
You will be returned with an activation code directly after Activating and in an email. You will also be able to "login" and review all your processed files using your email user ID and your assigned password.

You can provide your visitors with shortcuts to sections of your NewsReader by adding an index. All you need to do is enter a description of the section and the page number where that section starts.
